The current state of Destiny (2014)
- Online is essential: The original Destiny was a multiplayer-only experience that required an Xbox Live Gold (now Game Pass Core) subscription to play. It is no longer a viable way to experience the Destiny story or world online.
- Expansion content is unusable: All of the original DLC and expansions, including The Dark Below, House of Wolves, The Taken King, and Rise of Iron, have been bundled into the more recent games or vaulted. The codes for these expansions, which were often included in physical copies, are likely used or expired anyway.
- Better value elsewhere: A pre-owned copy of the original Destiny is a poor investment. Many of the same concepts and game modes can be found in Destiny 2, which has a free-to-play version and includes all of the updated content.
What to buy instead
If you're interested in the Destiny universe, here are your best options:
- Download Destiny 2 (Free-to-Play): The base game of Destiny 2 is free to download and includes enough content to get you started. This is the only official, supported way to play Destiny online.
- Purchase Destiny 2 expansions: If you enjoy the free version, you can purchase one of the later expansions like Lightfall or The Final Shape to unlock the latest stories, missions, and abilities.
- Look for Destiny: The Collection (2016): If you are determined to have a physical copy of the original game, look for Destiny: The Collection. It included the base game and all expansions on the disk, making for a more complete single-purchase experience—though still a dead online game.
