Multiplatform support
MLB The Show 22 was the first in the series to be released on Nintendo Switch, alongside the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. It also featured full cross-platform play and cross-progression, allowing players on different consoles to compete against each other and continue their progress seamlessly.

New and updated modes
  • Online Co-op: This new mode allows players to team up in 2v2 or 3v3 matches online. To ensure fairness, players swap positional responsibilities each inning.
  • Mini Seasons: A new single-player mode for Diamond Dynasty pits your custom team against a new set of competitive teams every season, offering fresh challenges.
  • March to October: This streamlined mode, which focuses on key moments of a team's season, was updated with new tools for custom uniforms, logos, and created stadiums.
  • Road to the Show: Players can now create and progress multiple ballplayers in this RPG-style career mode.

Gameplay improvements
While the on-field gameplay remained fundamentally strong, there were several refinements:
  • Refined pinpoint pitching: The pitching mechanic was made more challenging to execute perfectly, leading to more strategic pitching battles.
  • Improved ball physics and fielding: Tweaks to ball physics created more variety in hits, and new fielding animations improved the responsiveness of player movements.
  • New difficulty settings: Two new settings, "Amateur" and "Minors," were added to help new players learn the game.

New-gen console features
On the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, the game offered several exclusive features and improvements:
  • Stadium Creator: The mode returned with a streamlined user interface, allowing players to build their own ballparks for use in games.
  • 4K resolution and 60fps: Next-gen consoles delivered a higher-fidelity visual experience with a smoother frame rate.
  • New commentary team: The booth was staffed with new play-by-play and color commentators, offering a fresh broadcast experience.

Reception
MLB The Show 22 was generally well-received for its solid gameplay and a wealth of content. However, some critics noted that the series was showing its age, with modes like Road to the Show remaining largely unchanged and a number of online technical issues plaguing the game at launch. The game was available on Xbox Game Pass for subscribers.
