Setting and story
- A new wasteland: The game is a sequel to 2011's Rage but takes place 30 years later. An asteroid has destroyed 80% of Earth's population, but the world has recovered with new landscapes, including varied regions of lush jungles, swamps, and deserts.
- The protagonist: You play as Walker, the last Ranger of the wasteland. After your home is destroyed and your adoptive family killed by the tyrannical Authority, you embark on a quest for vengeance to destroy their leader, General Cross.
- A "soft reboot": The story is designed so that new players don't need to have played the original Rage to understand the plot.
Gameplay features
- Satisfying combat: The core of the game is its fast, fluid, and powerful first-person shooting. The combat has been praised for its intensity, visceral enemy reactions, and excellent weapons.
-
Nanotrite abilities: As a Ranger, you have superhuman powers called Nanotrites. These abilities can be upgraded and used in combat to create devastating combos. Examples include:
- Slam: A powerful ground-pound attack.
- Shatter: A force push that sends enemies flying.
- Vortex: A grenade that pulls enemies into one spot before exploding.
- Overdrive mode: By killing enemies in succession, you can charge your Overdrive meter. Activating it significantly increases your weapon damage, regenerates health, and causes explosions to occur with every shot.
- Vehicle combat: The game features high-octane vehicular combat with an array of wasteland-ready vehicles, including monster trucks and gyrocopters. You can drive any vehicle you find.
- Open-world activities: The world is dotted with enemy camps, convoys, and side missions to tackle. You explore "Arks," which are advanced bunkers that provide new weapons and Nanotrite abilities.
Critical reception
- Mixed reviews: Upon release, Rage 2 received mixed to average reviews. While the gunplay was widely praised as excellent and addictive, the game received criticism for its open-world design.
- Empty open world: Many critics and players found the open world to be beautiful but ultimately empty, with repetitive activities.
- Weak story: The story and characters were generally criticized as forgettable and uninspired, which clashed with the vibrant, chaotic tone of the combat.
Who is it for?
- Rage 2 is for players who prioritize exciting, visceral first-person shooter combat over a deep story or a highly detailed open world. If you're looking to turn off your brain and enjoy pure, destructive mayhem, Rage 2 delivers on that front.
